Lesson 3: Python vs Node.js

The everyday picture

Two well-equipped kitchens. Python's kitchen has the best scientific instruments: scales, microscopes, lab equipment. Node.js's kitchen is built for a restaurant rush: one fast chef who never stands waiting, starting the next order while the oven does the last one.

What it really is

What it means for your idea

If your idea is mostly a website or app (bookings, customers, orders), Node.js lets you use one language, JavaScript/TypeScript, for both the screen and the server. If the heart of your idea is data or AI work (analysing documents, training models, heavy number crunching), Python is the natural home. Many products use both: Node.js or TypeScript for the app, and a small Python service for the AI part.

Pick this when...

Quick check

Your app is slow. Should you rewrite it from Node.js to Python to make it faster? No. First look at the database queries and the design. The language is rarely the bottleneck, and Python wouldn't be faster for this anyway.

"Python is the AI language, so Python makes apps fast." True or false? False, and a very natural mix-up. Python makes AI and data work fast to build, thanks to its ready-made tools. It doesn't make a web app faster to run. Even the people who planned this course believed it at first, which is why it's here.

Python is not covered by the 100 modules yet; it is a strong candidate for an added course.
